We’re inching towards the Summer Solstice and I’m feeling a newfound appreciate for the longer days. As a chronic early-riser, this means I have plenty of daylight and fewer excuses to neglect the books piled on our coffee table.
I’ve sparked a new, meaningful relationship with the library this year that I can see is strengthening my relationship with reading. I used to impulsively buy books without giving it much thought, stuck with a shelf full of titles I half-enjoyed but likely wouldn’t re-read. I’m careful about curating my closet, so the same consideration should go for my bookshelf, right?
Recently read:
Motherhood by Sheila Heti
This is a new favorite book of mine. A powerful contemplation about motherhood, weighing the difficult decision whether to become one or not. If you know me, this is something I love to discuss with my fellow thirty-year olds, fascinated by everyone’s different outlooks now that our society is questioning the topic more and more.
Freedom Is a Constant Struggle: Ferguson, Palestine, and the Foundations of a Movement by Angela Y. Davis
An important collection of interviews, essays and speeches connecting past struggles and current day conflict in relation to Palestinian liberation. *Recommended by @bigbookladyPure Colour by Sheila Heti
I’ve fallen in love with Sheila Heti’s writing style, this is a poetic story about navigating grief.
Currently reading:
The Perfectionist’s Guide to Losing Control: A Path to Peace and and Power by Katherine Morgan Schafler
A lot to unpack in this book, but definitely necessary as a fellow perfectionist!A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara
My friends who’ve read this already have prepared me for the inevitable heartbreak.
To-be read:
Tonight I’m Someone Else: Essays by Chelsea Hodson
Minor Detail by Adania Shibli
*Another book recommended by @bigbookladyPiranesi by Susanna Clarke
I packed three books on a girls trip this past weekend to St. George Island (ambitious, I know). My best friend Kat and I even showed up with the same book <3 To me, that helps summarize just how wholesome the entire weekend was. My heart is still bursting.
On our last morning, I woke up alone at 5:45am to watch the sunrise (told you I’m an early riser). Afterwards, I went on the rooftop deck to read, enjoy my iced coffee and feel the ocean breeze before the intense Florida heat set in.
Lately though, I’m lugging around my books in my Dragon Diffusion bag, re-wearing the same Mesh flats from Shop Peche (similar ones here) and taking as many morning walks as possible.
Odds and ends:
Storygraph for book tracking
This slip dress when it’s too hot for clothes
Comment te dire adieu by Françoise Hardy (RIP </3)
A coffee subscription by my friend’s Touchy Coffee, so you never forget to buy beans.
Supergoop sunscreen, forever and ever.
Until next time, I’ll be daydreaming of reading here.
